There are many ways to consume cannabis. But of all the methods—smoking it, eating it, vaping it and dabbing it—vaping is quickly becoming one of the most popular. So much so that “vape” was named Oxford Dictionaries’ 2014 “word of the year.”

For users who prefer to smoke marijuana, vaping is an alternative that offers several features and benefits.

Lightshade Marijuana Vaping

How Vaping Works

“Vaping” is short for “vaporizing”—a method of consuming marijuana by using either a desktop or portable pen-like vaporizer to inhale weed in the form of vapor.

Users can vape different forms of marijuana concentrates, such as wax, shatter, live resin and hash oil, or in some cases, dried flower. When using a portable vape pen, users place a small amount of marijuana inside the pen. Different pens operate slightly differently depending on whether they are designed to vape marijuana in the form of concentrates, oil cartridges or dried flower. Once the cannabis product is inserted into the vape pen, the cap is replaced and the user pushes a button to heat a coil. Then, the vaporized cannabis is smoked, or “vaped,” from the pen’s mouthpiece.

Some vape pens use thinning elements like propylene glycol or coconut oil, while others do not.

Features & Benefits

Vaping is a convenient, discreet way for users to consume marijuana, which is appealing to many patients and customers. Many vape pens are designed to fit in small places, such as pockets and purses, and the vapor that’s emitted is often odorless. Since many people also vape tobacco products, using a vape pen to consume marijuana is not easily detectable.

Smoking marijuana in its traditional flower form burns carcinogens, and causes users to get smoke in their lungs. As people become more aware and cautious of the negative health effects of smoking and ingesting carcinogens, vaping and other alternative forms of smoking, such as dabbing concentrates, are growing in popularity.
